Pediatric Manual Wheelchairs Vs Strollers

A wheelchair and an adaptive stroller are two different mobility aids designed for individuals with different needs. Here's a brief comparison between the two:

Wheelchair:

  1. Purpose: Wheelchairs are primarily designed for individuals who have limited or no mobility in their lower extremities. They provide seated mobility and allow individuals to move around independently.
  2. Features: Wheelchairs typically have large rear wheels that can be self-propelled by the user. They may also have small front wheels for steering and maneuverability. Most all our wheelchairs offer caregiver push handles as well so the wheelchair can be pushed similarly to a stroller.
  3. Adjustability: Wheelchairs can be customized to fit the specific needs and preferences of the user. Spinlife offers basic stock pediatric wheelchairs and fully customized pediatric wheelchairs that are built to fit the individual. A short list of customizations: height, backrest angle, leg rests, color, positioning aid, wheel type and size.
  4. Accessibility: Wheelchairs are designed to navigate various terrains, including indoor and outdoor environments. They often have features like anti-tip devices, brakes, and sometimes suspension systems to enhance stability and safety. Independence: Wheelchairs provide a higher level of independence for individuals with mobility impairments as they can self-propel.

Adaptive Stroller:

  1. Purpose: Adaptive strollers are primarily designed for young children with mobility impairments who cannot walk independently or for extended periods. They offer a safe and comfortable seating option for children with special needs.
  2. Features: Adaptive strollers are lightweight, compact, and easy to maneuver. They usually have a reclining seat, supportive backrest, and safety harness to ensure the child's comfort and safety. They may also feature sunshades, storage compartments, and adjustable footrests.
  3. Adjustability: Adaptive strollers can often be adjusted to accommodate the child's growth and changing needs. They may have adjustable seat positions, headrests, and other components that can be customized for optimal positioning.
  4. Caregiver Assistance: Adaptive strollers are usually pushed by a caregiver or parent rather than being self-propelled. They provide a means for the child to accompany their caregiver and participate in outdoor activities.
  5. It's important to note that the specific features and functionalities of wheelchairs and adaptive strollers can vary depending on the model and brand. With any complex mobility device, we always recommend consulting with your therapist or calling one of our SpinKids equipment experts to discuss your individual needs.
