Power Wheelchairs
Your product expert helped me select a power wheelchair that has the ability to handle all my needs.
1. TRAVEL/PORTABLE POWER WHEELCHAIRS
Travel power wheelchairs are designed not only for portability but also work well in compact or crowded spaces such as apartments, stores, cruise ships or malls. All of the Portable Power Chairs we carry must be able to disassemble. Most of our travel/portable models are disassembled by removing the seat, battery pack and base. Most components are relatively light but there may be some lifting involved in moving the heaviest components.
Folding power wheelchairs combine portability with full-time use. They have adaptable seating that accepts pressure-management cushions, full-coverage armrests and highly supportive backrest options. These models easily fit into automobile trunks or cargo areas for easy transport.
2. FULL SIZE POWER WHEELCHAIRS
Full size power wheelchairs are built for everyday use. Sturdy and durable, they are highly maneuverable due to their joystick controllers and small footprint. Several drive-types are available to suit every need. Center wheel drive power wheelchairs have the tightest turning radius' of all. They are perfect for moving around indoors in tight or confined space. Front wheel drive and rear wheel drive systems have benefits for outdoor use and climbing or descending hills.
3. HEAVY DUTY POWER WHEELCHAIRS
Designed for higher weight and larger users (ranging from 400 lbs. to 650 lbs.), heavy-duty electric wheelchairs are available in a variety of styles, including folding and center-wheel drive.
- Power Elevating Seats: Elevating power wheelchairs are full size power wheelchairs that have the ability to raise and lower the seat. These chairs are great for enabling the user to have face-to-face conversations with other people while they stand and access items that would otherwise be out of reach while seated. Elevating power wheelchairs perform best indoors or on flat, smooth surfaces.
- Ground Clearance: The space between the base of the tire and the undercarriage. Consider your doorways and thresholds, if the chair you are considering doesn’t have a high enough ground clearance to travers your threshold you may need to consider threshold ramps.
- Turning Radius: This is the smallest circular turn the powerchair can make. A tight turning radius allows for ease of operation and maneuvering around tight corners.
- Maximum Recommended Incline: This indicates the amount of an incline that the power chair can safely climb. This is important to consider when using outdoor sidewalks and exit ramps.
- Portability: It is important to consider how you will transport your powerchair. Travel powerchairs can be dissembled, and the pieces can be loaded into the trunk of your vehicle. Full-Size powerchairs require a vehicle lift or ramp to transport with your vehicle.
- Headlights: Ideal for lighting up dark hallways or dimly lit areas
- Suspension: Power Wheelchairs with suspension can add comfort when driving down sidewalks the suspension helps absorb the bumps and sidewalk cracks
- Curb Climbing Ability: This feature allows the power chair to safely traverse smaller curbs and thresholds
- Seat Options: The most common style of seat for full size power chairs is a full back captain seats. These seats come in many different widths and depths. For ideal comfort it is important to select the right size seat for you. Other seat considerations are solid seat pans if you need a skin protecting or positioning cushion
- Overall Width: It is important to consider what the widest measurement of the chair will be (base or seat width plus armrest) and use that measurement to make sure you can access all rooms or areas within your home. We suggest checking bathroom doorways and consider the kitchen and space between an island and or any appliances.
- Weight Capacity: How much weight the powerchair can safely handle according to the manufacturer. We always recommend a 10% buffer for weight changes. It is not worth compromising safety or performance.
- Operating Range: The distance the powerchair can travel on a single charge.
- Battery Charge Time: The amount of time required to recharge a battery after it completely drains ranges from as little as 2 hours to overnight.
