Which do I need - A Transport or Standard Manual Wheelchair?
When choosing a manual wheelchair to use to push another person in, you have two choices, a transport wheelchair or a manual wheelchair. The main difference is that a transport or companion chair has smaller rear wheels so it always requires someone else to push the person in the chair. A standard or lightweight wheelchair has large rear wheels which allows the option of the wheelchair to be pushed or propelled by the person sitting in the chair.
Benefits of a Transport Chair
Four smaller wheels for a narrow footprint. Great for tight areas. Many models come with hand brakes for more control by the person pushing. Smaller wheels make it lighter and easier to load in and out of the car. Lightweight transport chair models available – many models under 20 pounds.
Benefits of a Standard Manual Wheelchair
Larger wheels for a smoother ride and easier movement on higher thresholds or inclines. Person sitting in chair can self-propel with their hands of feet.
