Overview of the Veranda

The Invacare Veranda Standard Wheelchair provides comfort and mobility in an economical package. The 18" seat width comes standard with one-piece padded non-removable armrests and the 16" and 20" seat widths have removable desk length armrests standard. The Veranda comes with a stylish silver vein finish, padded nylon upholstery and has the option for removable desk-length arms for the 18" seat and padded elevating legrests for all seat widths.

*When the chair is ordered with non-removable armrests, it is essentially 2" narrower than the stated seat width.  If ordered with removable armrests, the usable seat width is the full stated seat width with the armrests removed, and 2" narrower with the armrests intact.

Measuring Guide

View Detailed Measurements

Seat Depth1
Measure from the most posterior point of the body to the inside of the knee, minus at least two inches. Some prefer more leg overhang to make room for their hand when lifting their leg.

Back Height2
Measured from the seat base to the top of the wheelchair back. Depends on how much upper back support is needed, and also affects freedom for the upper body to rotate.

Rear Seat to Floor3
Measurement from the ground to the rear seat edge. Relative to the front seat-to-floor dimension, this determines the rearward slope ("dump" or "squeeze") of the wheelchair seat.

Hanger Angle4
Determines how far the toes extend away from the body, measured from the horizontal. A tighter angle allows the wheelchair to turn around in less space. Depends in part on ability of the knee to bend towards the perpendicular.

Seat Width5
Determined by the widest point of the body from knee to hip, plus an inch to ensure room to move. Consider bulk of clothing, particularly a heavy winter coat, if relevant.

Wheel Camber6
Angle of the wheel relative to the vertical. More camber improves stability and agility, but also limits ability to pass through narrow spaces. A typical daily wheelchair uses three degrees of camber.

Front Seat to Floor7
Measure the leg from the back of the knee to the sole of the foot. Then subtract the thickness of the cushion when it is compressed. Next, add a minimum of two inches for footrest clearance. Do not add the footrest clearance if the wheelchair will be foot-propelled.

Footrest Width8
Measure from the inside of each legrest tubing the distance or desired distance between legrests.

Center of Gravity9
Measure from the front of the seat back post to the center of the rear axel.

Seat to Footrest Length10
Measure from the edge of the seat upholstery to the top rear of the footrest.

Backrest Angle11
Measure the the angle of the back post to the floor. Ninety degrees will be perpendicular to the floor, to approximate the angle from the back post to the seat, subtract two degrees from measurment for every .5" of dump.

Excellent wheelchair that gives me independence and it can move 360°.
Reviewer: s. from tucson, az

End User Desc: I am 78 years old and have always been very active, but got shingles and it caused severe nerve damage to my leg.

Strengths: It is comfortable for me to sit in. The wheels allow me to maneuver everywhere. It also has a back panel that allows others to step left front wheels onto a step. Foot panels are easy to remove and put on.

Weaknesses: None

Works for me.
Reviewer: r. from thornville, oh

End User Desc: Our second home is in Florida and needed a slim wheelchair to fit though the doorways. The minute I called you the fine service began.

Strengths: Slim!

Weaknesses: Pneumatic tires. I knew exactly what I was getting. Customer service was excellent and so was the prompt delivery. I will buy from you again. Thank you!

Outstanding wheelchair for someone with limited mobility!
Reviewer: l. from trinity, fl (caregiver)

End User Desc: My mother is 66 years old, and has limited mobility due to her arthritic knees.

Strengths: It is sturdy, but not so heavy that I cannot lift it to place in the trunk. It's very comfortable for my mother, and and as for me, the one who pushes her around, it's easy to maneuver. I love the large rear wheels because it allows you to use the "backpack" to put items in without them being against your legs as you push the wheelchair.

Weaknesses: I haven't found any so far!

Great for in home use
Reviewer: b. from gulfport, ms (caregiver)

End User Desc: My husband was using a smaller, lighter wheelchair that was not working well for his size. The Veranda standard chair with the 20" seat is perfect.

Strengths: Lightweight and ease of use

Weaknesses: Only problem we had was the delivery by FedEx. It was delivered on the bottom of stair steps (don't you think a wheelchair would be needed at the top of the stairs?)

Both chairs have already broken. They were not used daily. The quality was sorely lacking.
Reviewer: l. from st louis, mo (caregiver)

End User Desc: Residential facility for pts on fall risk

Strengths:

Weaknesses: The back broke off of one of the chairs; screws came through the nylon. The casters on the front wheels broke off of the second chair.

Works great for intended use
Reviewer: r. from orlando, fl (caregiver)

End User Desc: Using this at Disney World and similar places, for an individual who has difficulty walking long distances.

Strengths: Easy to use and collapse. Fits well in back of minivan. This is a great, portable, generic chair. Great basic wheelchair for trips or short term use.

Weaknesses: Just be aware this is probably not something you would want to sit in day in and day out. But it's GREAT for a day here and there, and trips.
