Overview of the Veranda

The Invacare Veranda Standard Wheelchair provides comfort and mobility in an economical package. The 18" seat width comes standard with one-piece padded non-removable armrests and the 16" and 20" seat widths have removable desk length armrests standard. The Veranda comes with a stylish silver vein finish, padded nylon upholstery and has the option for removable desk-length arms for the 18" seat and padded elevating legrests for all seat widths.

*When the chair is ordered with non-removable armrests, it is essentially 2" narrower than the stated seat width.  If ordered with removable armrests, the usable seat width is the full stated seat width with the armrests removed, and 2" narrower with the armrests intact.

Measuring Guide

View Detailed Measurements

Seat Depth1
Measure from the most posterior point of the body to the inside of the knee, minus at least two inches. Some prefer more leg overhang to make room for their hand when lifting their leg.

Back Height2
Measured from the seat base to the top of the wheelchair back. Depends on how much upper back support is needed, and also affects freedom for the upper body to rotate.

Rear Seat to Floor3
Measurement from the ground to the rear seat edge. Relative to the front seat-to-floor dimension, this determines the rearward slope ("dump" or "squeeze") of the wheelchair seat.

Hanger Angle4
Determines how far the toes extend away from the body, measured from the horizontal. A tighter angle allows the wheelchair to turn around in less space. Depends in part on ability of the knee to bend towards the perpendicular.

Seat Width5
Determined by the widest point of the body from knee to hip, plus an inch to ensure room to move. Consider bulk of clothing, particularly a heavy winter coat, if relevant.

Wheel Camber6
Angle of the wheel relative to the vertical. More camber improves stability and agility, but also limits ability to pass through narrow spaces. A typical daily wheelchair uses three degrees of camber.

Front Seat to Floor7
Measure the leg from the back of the knee to the sole of the foot. Then subtract the thickness of the cushion when it is compressed. Next, add a minimum of two inches for footrest clearance. Do not add the footrest clearance if the wheelchair will be foot-propelled.

Footrest Width8
Measure from the inside of each legrest tubing the distance or desired distance between legrests.

Center of Gravity9
Measure from the front of the seat back post to the center of the rear axel.

Seat to Footrest Length10
Measure from the edge of the seat upholstery to the top rear of the footrest.

Backrest Angle11
Measure the the angle of the back post to the floor. Ninety degrees will be perpendicular to the floor, to approximate the angle from the back post to the seat, subtract two degrees from measurment for every .5" of dump.

Exceeded expectations
Reviewer: C. from Stony Brook, NY

End User Desc: Age 23, drop attacks, widespread chronic pain, also partially blind.

Strengths: It's very easy to maneuver, much more so than my previous wheelchairs. Handles turns very well. I can even turn 360 in place. At 18" it can fit through most doors. The fact that it folds helps me take it through tight spaces. Has a pouch on the back that I use to store my cane. Handlebars make it easy to carry a backpack. I often thread my cane through the backpack handle when I put in the pouch so that it doesn't wobble much. The front wheels are relatively large in comparison to my previous wheelchairs which makes for easier handling of curbs and bumps and potholes in the sidewalk. It's relatively light so it's easy to take up the infamous one step; assuming you have the ability and there's no ramp.

Weaknesses: The brakes are poorly manufactured. My right brake broke immediately, as soon as I went on the train. I slam my feet down on the ground if I need to stop suddenly, but if you don't have that ability I definitely recommend looking for a different chair. It is a manual wheelchair so it takes some strength to maneuver.

Reviewer: S. from Moline, IL (caregiver)

End User Desc: 14 years old. Hemiplegic. She does have the ability to walk, however long distances are very difficult!

Strengths: I love that the metal is textured so as it gets dinged, which it will from normal use, it will not show as much! It's a very sturdy unit! And it was here in three days!! I would recommend SpinLife to others! Thanks so much!!!

Weaknesses: I have not yet seen any!
