decent product
Reviewer: Larry D. from Saint Johns, MI (caregiver)
End User Desc: Big brother is 68, smashed left ankle did not heal properly after two operations.

Strengths: Light, easy to store in the back of an Equinox. This is the second SX5 I have bought. Get the optional rubber run flat rear tires and the rubber front wheels! I push the wheelchair for miles and the rubber tires make for a far smoother ride.

Weaknesses: The first SX5 we had broke a standard front wheel and had a bumpy ride. At full power, the wheels of the first SX5 vibrated but the wheels of the second SX5 do not.

Strengths: The chair was surprisingly lighter than expected. Very sturdy and easy to load into the vehicle.

Weaknesses: Hand brakes are just a little hard to set, however, as a caregiver, that was not a real problem. Anyone who is hemi-paralysed would not be able to set the brakes.

Weaknesses: If I had been more knowledgable when when I made the purchase I would have purchased the liftable leg rests with the padded back rests instead of the standard ones. I wish the seat had the strips on for the valcro on the pad to attach to.

Meets my needs better than any competing product.
Reviewer: Jim F. from Hayward, CA
End User Desc: I am an age 60 diabetic. I cannot walk more than a couple hundred yards at a time and cannot stand for more than about 5 minutes.

Strengths: I need 22" width, and a physically light chair that will not excessively stress my wife. This purchase is intended for occasional, not full time use. This chair met these needs better than competing products and was much less expensive. It is sturdy and performed better than we expected. It allowed me to enjoy a vacation to Las Vegas that I was dreading because of the all the time I would have to be on my feet. It helped so much getting through airports not to mention those huge casinos.

Weaknesses: It's one major flaw is that it does not fold as compactly as most others brands, which caused difficulties with transport in taxicabs and compact cars. There needs to be a provision for removing the back or folding it down to the seat the way other brands do. Two taxicabs we took had full size spare tires and it was an engineering feat to get the chair in the trunk. Another cab driver couldn't figure it out and wouldn't take my suggestions - he would up putting the chair up front with him. We rented a full size car and it was difficult getting it in and out of the trunk.

The chair is perfect for what we need it for.
Reviewer: Joyce S. from Camillus, NY (caregiver)
End User Desc: Male 69, unable to walk any distance without aid.

Strengths: We were able to get a large sized chair and still keep it lightweight. As a small caregiver this was very important. It does push around a 300 lb. person easily.

Weaknesses: The larger front wheels hit the foot plate when we attend to backup. So going backwards is pretty much out of the question. Also the footplates were installed backward and it took awhile to figure out why they were not working properly, but we were able to fix the problem ourselves.

Strengths: Handles several inches higher than other wheelchairs making it much easier to push as I am over six feet tall and always had to hunch over to push other chairs. It's lighter weight makes it easier to load and unload into car.

Weaknesses: Framework is not as rigid as other chairs. Footrests should be metal not plastic. Replaced them with metal rests from an old chair.

Reviewer: Larry B. from Racine, WI
End User Desc: Industrial Engineer beginning to age and needing a new and better wheelchair. Had polio 55 years ago.

Strengths: Convenient, very flexible use, use it in airports and on cruise ship. Not motorized so it helps me to keep my upper body strenth, ride is very smooth, the wider front wheels help at every crack, crevice and climb. It's wide, comfortable, and just a little elegant! I especially enjoy the foot rests because they are removable and it makes putting the chair in the back of my van 3 times easier than my last chair. The mud gripping big tires and excellent brakes make it easier to go and stop. I guess, I just love my new chair. I have recommended the chair and Spinlife to several people already, including one gentleman in Atlanta whose son was paralyzed in a car accident. I don't know his name and only had time to write down the website. I highly recommend the chair and the company...

Seat Depth1
Measure from the most posterior point of the body to the inside of the knee, minus at least two inches. Some prefer more leg overhang to make room for their hand when lifting their leg.

Back Height2
Measured from the seat base to the top of the wheelchair back. Depends on how much upper back support is needed, and also affects freedom for the upper body to rotate.

Rear Seat to Floor3
Measurement from the ground to the rear seat edge. Relative to the front seat-to-floor dimension, this determines the rearward slope ("dump" or "squeeze") of the wheelchair seat.

Hanger Angle4
Determines how far the toes extend away from the body, measured from the horizontal. A tighter angle allows the wheelchair to turn around in less space. Depends in part on ability of the knee to bend towards the perpendicular.

Seat Width5
Determined by the widest point of the body from knee to hip, plus an inch to ensure room to move. Consider bulk of clothing, particularly a heavy winter coat, if relevant.

Wheel Camber6
Angle of the wheel relative to the vertical. More camber improves stability and agility, but also limits ability to pass through narrow spaces. A typical daily wheelchair uses three degrees of camber.

Front Seat to Floor7
Measure the leg from the back of the knee to the sole of the foot. Then subtract the thickness of the cushion when it is compressed. Next, add a minimum of two inches for footrest clearance. Do not add the footrest clearance if the wheelchair will be foot-propelled.
