Random Acts of Kindness for Seniors: Thoughtful Ideas and Inspiration

We shouldn’t need a national holiday to be kind to each other, but every little reminder helps us reconnect to the people around us.

February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, a day celebrated by people across the country to encourage kind words and thoughtful actions. Small actions can truly make a difference in the lives of loved ones and even total strangers. Seniors have given so much of their lives to helping others in need, so isn’t it time recognize and appreciate all they’re done with our kindness?

Let’s take a look a few of the many ways that you can commit a random act of kindness for a senior today and any day of the year.

Kindness Ideas toward Seniors

If you have a senior in your life that you care about, this is a great place to start. Perhaps a parent, grandparent, extended family member, or neighbor would enjoy a quick visit or phone call to say hello.

Here are some other random acts of kindness ideas to consider for the senior in your life.

  • Send seniors you know handwritten letters or postcards when you travel
  • Offer to take a senior’s dog out for a nice, long walk or give the pup a bath
  • Clean out a senior’s cat litter box
  • Plant flowers outside a senior’s home or bring a potted plant indoors to enjoy
  • Help a senior pick out mobility equipment to address specific needs
  • Clean a senior’s car at a car wash
  • Arrange a senior’s photos and mementos into a scrapbook

If you aren’t close with a senior right now, there’s still plenty you can do for the senior community to show your kindness. Good places to get involved include retirement communities, nursing homes, community events, and pretty much any public place.

These are some ways to get involved in your community and brighten a senior’s day.

  • Help a senior carry groceries or return an empty cart at a grocery store
  • Hold a door open for a senior in a public place
  • Visit a local senior community home and offer to become a pen pal
  • Compliment a senior on her handbag or dress
  • Start a conversation with a senior walking a dog in a park

Seniors Giving Back

However, seniors don’t need to only recipients of kindness on this day; they can give back too! There are lots of ways that seniors can show each other and their communities how much they care by volunteering their time and talents.

Seniors possess a wealth of knowledge about life, love, and hardship, so there is much to be gained from their wisdom and kindness.

Caregiving is a demanding job, and family caregivers deserve random acts of kindness too.

Last November, the AARP launched a campaign to reward random acts of kindness towards caregivers. The contest is open to U.S. residents and runs through March 15, 2016. Simply share your story of how you surprised the family caregiver in your life, and the top 12 submissions will share a $10,000 prize!

On the surface, kind actions can seem small and insignificant, but they can have a huge impact on people’s lives. So take a moment out of your busy schedule today to begin an ongoing habit of kindness that doesn’t need a reminder on the calendar. You never know when you’ll need a helping hand, so brighten someone’s day and feel the pure joy that it gives to you as well.
