Top 10 Movies about Aging

Have you had just about enough of action thrillers, space epics and teen-age love?  Me too.  That’s why I set out to make a list of my first movies starring….mature people.

In honor of the Academy Awards,  I have chosen my 10 favorites.  In fact, I was surprised how many good movies I found that celebrate aging. Chances are, there are others that deserve a top slot. But these are the ones I settled on.

  1. Driving Miss Daisy (1989). An old Jewish woman her black chauffeur in the American South have a relationship that grows and improves over the years.   Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman in a classic that covers topics of bigotry, racism, age and independence.

2. The Bucket List (2007) Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.  Mmmmm…Morgan’s name comes up a lot in this list.

Looking Forward to Big Picture 2016

Happy Wednesday everyone! I’m taking a moment to breathe and share a preview of our Annual Big Picture event. Every year SpinLife hosts a unique weekend when our Product Experts and our great partner brands all convene at our home offices for 5 days of crazy, wonderful SpinLife magic. We’re the only online retailer who actually invites their manufacturers to physically come to our offices and show off their latest and greatest products and do training with our teams.

Our Big Picture events start today with internal roundtables between our departments. This is a great time for our Product Experts to share with the Marketing, Merchandising, and WebApp teams what they’re hearing on the phones. This helps them choose better products to list on the website, and make site changes to help our team and inform our customers. Our departments talk to each other every day, all year. But this is really a great time to discuss the “big picture”.

Product Spotlight: Pride Infinite Position Lift Chairs

Our customers frequently ask for guidance when it comes to purchasing a lift chair, particularly….

“What in the world does infinite position mean and why do I need that?!”

First, let me explain what it means. Infinite position chairs are electrically controlled with a wired remote hand control that lifts and reclines them with no effort on your part, save for the pushing of a button. What sets Infinite Position Chairs apart from 2 or 3 position lift chairs is the fact that they have two separate motors that individually control the backrest from the seat and footrest portion of the chair. The hand control has additional buttons allowing you to change the angle of the backrest up and down, and independently change the position of the seat and footrest using different buttons on the hand control. This can be really helpful in mitigating a number of physical issues, and allow for you maximum comfort when relaxing since you can really “fine-tune” the position of your chair.

Four steps to your best custom power chair

Learn about Power Wheelchairs at SpinLife!

Let’s take a step by step approach to help choose the best custom Power wheelchair

Step One

What is your height when standing, and your weight? To get the best service out of your Power wheelchair, your size and its capabilities must match. Generally standard Power wheelchairs are rated for up to 300 lbs. Heavy Duty power wheelchairs increase the weight rating by increasing the size of the powerbase itself, the strength of the motors and other materials that make up the chair. Pick a chair rated at least 10% over your actual weight.

Measure across your lap to see how wide a seat you will need, stay as narrow as possible for better maneuverability. If you are tall or have long legs, you will need a deeper seat than standard.

Step Two

Where will the chair be used most often? Inside, outside or both? The object is of course, to provide the maximum independence for the user. If we are to use a chair outside over rougher terrain here are a few models of chairs which will be much better.

Mom Needs a Housekeeper: Knowing When It’s Time to Hire Help

If your mom is anything like mine, she takes tremendous pride in her home and keeping it clean, beautiful, and clutter-free.  However, keeping up with household chores can become a tremendous burden when faced with health and mobility issues as we get older. It may be difficult to convince your mother that she needs a little help around the house, but there are a few telltale signs that indicate it might be time to outsource a few cleaning tasks.

Risks of an Unkempt Home

Not only is a messy home a bit unsightly, but it can also be unsafe. Clutter on the floor can cause trips and falls, and contents of an organized closet could fall onto your mom and injure her. Eating off of dirty dishes could make her ill, and wearing unclean clothes can cause skin rashes and infections.

There are varying degrees of household chores, so while your mom may be able to keep up with dusting and dishes, she might need a little help with taking out the trash on snowy days or mopping the floors for spring cleaning. Hoarding has emerged as a serious problem among seniors, so it’s important to manage a household before it gets out of control.
