Overview of the Lightweight Transport Chair

The Drive Lightweight Transport wheelchair is one of the the lightest transport chairs on the market, weighing in at only 19 lbs! With four great colors to choose from, you can be transported in style. A seat belt and swing-away removable footrests are standard and make it easy to get in and out of this chair.  A fold-down back allows for easier storage and transport and padded armrests add additional comfort.

*Seat width between arms is 2" narrower than seat width measurement.

Measuring Guide

View Detailed Measurements

Seat Depth1
Measure from the most posterior point of the body to the inside of the knee, minus at least two inches. Some prefer more leg overhang to make room for their hand when lifting their leg.

Back Height2
Measured from the seat base to the top of the wheelchair back. Depends on how much upper back support is needed, and also affects freedom for the upper body to rotate.

Rear Seat to Floor3
Measurement from the ground to the rear seat edge. Relative to the front seat-to-floor dimension, this determines the rearward slope ("dump" or "squeeze") of the wheelchair seat.

Hanger Angle4
Determines how far the toes extend away from the body, measured from the horizontal. A tighter angle allows the wheelchair to turn around in less space. Depends in part on ability of the knee to bend towards the perpendicular.

Seat Width5
Determined by the widest point of the body from knee to hip, plus an inch to ensure room to move. Consider bulk of clothing, particularly a heavy winter coat, if relevant.

Wheel Camber6
Angle of the wheel relative to the vertical. More camber improves stability and agility, but also limits ability to pass through narrow spaces. A typical daily wheelchair uses three degrees of camber.

Front Seat to Floor7
Measure the leg from the back of the knee to the sole of the foot. Then subtract the thickness of the cushion when it is compressed. Next, add a minimum of two inches for footrest clearance. Do not add the footrest clearance if the wheelchair will be foot-propelled.

Footrest Width8
Measure from the inside of each legrest tubing the distance or desired distance between legrests.

Center of Gravity9
Measure from the front of the seat back post to the center of the rear axel.

Seat to Footrest Length10
Measure from the edge of the seat upholstery to the top rear of the footrest.

Backrest Angle11
Measure the the angle of the back post to the floor. Ninety degrees will be perpendicular to the floor, to approximate the angle from the back post to the seat, subtract two degrees from measurment for every .5" of dump.

Do Not Buy--Latest version cheap and unsafe
Reviewer: m. from abingdon, va (caregiver)

End User Desc: 68, Parkinson's

Strengths:

Weaknesses: The 17" chair we bought two months ago was a little too narrow, so we ordered the 19". I am frustrated and horrified at the difference in quality of the wheels and brakes. Maybe the 17" was less popular and sat on the shelf longer, and so we received a slightly older version, and the 19" was newer, revised design with a few corners cut to make the price point. The wheels on the old chair seem to be made of rubber; the "composite" material of the new chair's wheels had grooves in it from the brakes after one use, now the brakes are shaving off ribbons of plastic from the wheels. The brake assemblies on the old chair were bolted THROUGH the frame in addition to the two bolts around the frame. The new chair is not bolted through the frame so the brake can rotate around the frame. When returned to its intended position, the brake will not contact the wheel with enough pressure to stop movement of the wheel. This renders the chair unsafe for any use, and since the chair is now used (just once!), it cannot be returned. I contacted Spinlife, who contacted the manufacturer, who replied, "It is a design change. Tell them to tighten the bolts." I did tighten them, but the brakes, even in the correct position still slip. DO NOT BUY THIS CHAIR. IT IS UNSAFE.

Lightweight, easy use.
Reviewer: j. from san jose, ca (caregiver)

End User Desc: Transporting patient to doctor’s office, etc. Patient uses walker in home.

Strengths: Lightweight, easy to get in and out of cars. Durable, holds up well, the in/out use is hard on equipment and these do well.

Weaknesses: The brake bolts don't hold the brake in proper alignment to do the job. I frequently have to realign them.
